I can't reproduce this, please try to upgrade to the new zentyal-virt 2.2.3, which includes a lot of fixes. If the problem persist, please reopen the ticket but try to provide the steps you follow to reproduce as much detailed as possible. Thanks!

in zentyal GUI i set up a new VM ("xpklon") in attachment (comments.txt) you can see the output from zentyal before i save settings.(#1) no error message after save. (whit out autostart) and taged wit # are my comments

some digging....

I set up a new VM. for this i make a default folder for all of my VM (files) absolute way is: /svr/kvm/$Name/$.img or $.iso

The folder for my DSL (ISO) file is : /svr/kvm/dsl/DSL.iso

I can setup the new VM. neither the Device Settings. I *must* set up the ISO File as a Harddisk?! The Zentyal exept the filepath to the ISO file only as HD not as CD/DVD. after save the settings , the error msg. is:

Hello mka,

the problem is that you are suing a path for your disk image name and it should be a regular name. Also the extension is not required. Try to call it 'xpklon' and retry.

We have made the changeset [53b7732b] to restrict the names of the hard disk and avoid this situation in the future.

I see you have changed the name of the hard disk so it is not the problem.

I have created a VM with your same configuration and it starts correctly so it is not a configuration failure, at least no a obviously one.

The 'error: monitor socket did not show up.' is a kind of catch-all error, that could be raised for a lot of conditions.

One of the many problems that can fire this error, is not having enough memory to run the VMs, so check your system free memory, free memory, and try a VM with smaller memory footprint.

Hello Mka,

'ANON' is just the name for anonymous functions in Perl; in this case I think the error message comes from apache-perl itself. Do you have your VM with auto-start?. In this case the 'monitor socket' error would cause the restart of the module to fail.

are you saying that a VM with a windows ISO starts OK, but with the Damn Small Linux ISO it fails?. What about other Linux distributions?.

Also the memory in your machine does not seem to be a problem.

As for the error that forces you to click twice in 'Save changes' I had fixed it in the repository. However it was related to adding ports to firewall's services and it is not related to the VMs errors.

I have delete all VM in Zentyal GUI (Virtual Manager) I set up a New (only) VM - i give only the Name "xpklon-qcow"in Virtual Manager. And set the checkbox "Autostart" (On /var/lib/zentyal/machines/ i found a new folder named "xpklon-qcow". In this Folder are a domain.xml. I edit the domain.xml (I use the settings from this post:  http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,6005.msg24238.html#msg24238 "J. A. Calvo")

I start the VM via Virtual Manager in Zentyal-GUI: First, it looks good, but last msg is:

Hi just a quick update from me with the same errors... problems.. I've installed zentyal on a new machine ,upadated, installed only virt,users, ftp (+what was there) so min. conf. Again no HDD detected, while CD works fine. output from grep libvirt /var/log/messages is the same as above. Hello Mka,

the last error is only consequence of the 'error: monitor socket did not show up'; if you don't have any VM set to automatically start it will not bother you.

In the log files I see the following:

 error: operation failed: domain 'xpklon' already exists with uuid ddb4a3c8-899b-da53-2940-c1b5edf87068

Maybe you should remove this VM and create another new with different name

Also there is a way to see and destroy (unknown to the module) vm instances:

Hello mka, I have found an error, if a VM is removed and it is running or paused, it continues to run. This is fixed in the branch jag/virt-rmvm of the repository but it could be the root cause of the problems.

If this is the case, I suggest to do this:

• stop all the VMs in the interface

Hello Mka,

I think with that all the removal some state has been left for previous run, probably in tsome of the files in /var/lib/zentyal/machines/xpklon .

For this reason I would redo the process but choosing a different name for the VM (something different of 'xpklon'). Also we can remove /var/lib/zentyal/machines/xpklon to going back to a blank state.

Also in the outputs you have pasted we have seen that we could have a kvm process not listed in virsh. So additionally after using virsh we could kill any remaining kvm process.

Could you try again the process with this additions ?

the problem is that only qcow2 disks are supported and your Windows disk is not in this format:

/srv/kvm/xpklon/xpklon.img: x86 boot sector, Microsoft Windows XP MBR (german), Serial 0x5c205c1; partition 1: ID=0x7, active, starthead 1, startsector 63, 20948697 sectors, code offset 0xc0

I have deattached it and created a test disk to see if the VM can start and it can.

So you need to convert the disk to qcow2 format or get a WinXP disk in this format.

Please, check that the file you downlaoded has the correctly md5sum:

I have created a VM with your same configuration and a DSL iso with this md5sum ->  http://distro.ibiblio.org/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.4.10.iso.md5.txt

It worked as expected. Maybe you have some trouble with ancient machines?. Could you look to /var/lib/zentyal/machines/dsl-live/ to assure it is all in order?.

Ah, for the firewall restart is necessary to update the vnc service. There is code in the repository to fix the "two savechanges" problem but anyway after the second 'save changes' the service should be set.
