My first installation on real hardware, I selected all Zentyal features and proceeded with installation. Zentyal failed during the installation.

I tried again, this time installing the OS, then selecting no Zentyal modules. Once installed, I applied all Ubuntu updates. Then, I installed a few modules. It wasn't until I installed the File Sharing and Domain Services module that Zentyal failed in the same way.

Running any 'apt-get install' or 'apt-get upgrade' command from the terminal ends with apt again trying and failing to set up the broken packages. I'm completely new to SAMBA4, so I have no idea where to being troubleshooting this, but it seems like a package issue.

Following "Setting up samba4 (4.0.0~alpha18.dfsg1-4) ..." is a series of 'Unknown parameter encountered: "%SomeParameterName?%"' and 'Ignoring unknown parameter "%SomeParameterName?%"'. The parameters, in order, are:

max log size syslog unix password sync passwd program pam password change map to guest usershare allow guests guest ok guest ok

After these are displayed, the message "ERROR: Invalid smb.comf" appears. Then, the "Unknown parameter"/"Ignoring unknown parameter" messages again in order twice more.

Finally, this appears:

(I've omitted the setup failures for zentyal-dns and zentyal-samba that next appear, as they appear to be failing since SAMBA is not correctly set up.)

I ran 'sudo rm /etc/samba/smb.conf', then attempted another upgrade. This time, SAMBA went through a lengthy, healthy looking setup process, and ends with a 'samba4 start/running, process 21132'. zentyal-dns still fails:

This issue reproduces when I upgrade a Zentyal server I had previously built in a VM when the 2.3 beta was originally released, so it does not appear to be specific to this machine.

Hello,

the problem here is that zentyal-samba code it is intended to run with our version of samba4; the latest samba4(4.0.0~alpha18.dfsg1-4) version on precise has changed and is not longer compatible with samba4.

You should install the samba4 version and its dependencies (samba4-common-bin, python-samba) from zentyal 2.3 ppa to avoid this problem; I suggest also you pin with greater priority the ppa to avoid this problems in the future.

I know that this downgrading to zentyal2.3 version is cumbersome, we will close this when we have the dependencies fixed somehow.

I worked around this by installing samba4 stuff (except zentyal-samba) as instructed in comment 6, _before_ installing Zentyal. I also locked the samba4 package version to prevent accidental upgrade to the incompatible version until this is fixed. Before the workaround Zentyal became totally broken during setup and I had to reinstall the whole OS.

Zentyal then reported this after installing components:

I still see a lot of the same Samba-related errors in zentyal.log ("Can't load '/usr/lib/perl5/auto/LDB/LDB.so" etc.), despite using the correct version.

Now the dashboard keeps telling "The following packages are not properly installed. You need to fix this before trying to use them or install new modules.", along with a long list of components, possibly all that I selected. Repairing with 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' doesn't work because of various dependency problems (looks like unconfigured packages). For example, 'dpkg --configure zentyal-services' says:

this is fixed in the last zentyal-samba and samba4 available from Zentyal's ppa.

In case this have affected your system, maybe you need to downgrade first like is explained in this comment: https://trac.zentyal.org/ticket/4097#comment:6
