Document the differences between static routes and multi gateway rules

Reported by: ejhernandez@… Owned by: ejhernandez@…
Milestone: nice to have someday Component: network
Severity: normal Keywords: static route
Cc:

Description

Currently, it's possible to add static routes in two ways. By old static routes interface or by the brand new multigateway which takes into account the reachability from a gateway and much more.

I suggest to deprecate static routes and add a migration script to set all static routes by adding gateways and multigateway rules.

Yes but if you do this and you want to be able to access a route over the vpn that is on the external side of your connection then it will not work. Many real world vpn devices allow you to set the new default gateway to be the endpoint of the vpn tunnel as long as the vpn tunnel is up.

The Static Routes option needs to stay.

Here is an example,

I have some machines that are on the outside, connected to the external lan of the ebox and I would like all users who connect to openvpn to connect to those machines via the vpn tunnel. Unless the static routes option stay, or atleast the vpn module doesn't check for the existance of a certain route, this wouldn't be possible.

  • Summary changed from Static routes deprecated to Document the differences between static routes and multi gateway rules
  • Milestone changed from 0.10 to 0.13

As it is stated in this ticket, both rules and routes and used for different purposes.

I recognise it can be misleading.

I am changing the summary to a documentation/UI task
